Tell us about how you contribute to the success of Carrick Wealth as an organisation.

My primary role within Carrick Wealth as a Wealth Specialist is to provide expert advice to my clients and prospects on all areas of financial planning for them and their families. Carrick has grown from strength to strength each year since opening its doors some 5 years ago. This has not only been from a financial and assets point of view, but more importantly also in terms of the respect and reputation, we have earned as experts within our industry both in Africa and globally. I believe my own personal values and personality mirrors that of Carrick, and along with many of my colleagues this has contributed to the success of the organisation to date. With 8 years in the industry both here in South Africa and in Ghana, I have gained an incredible amount of experience which I have been able to pass onto my colleagues. As in any office environment, there has to be a strong element of teamwork, togetherness and also fun to make the business a place that everyone is excited to come to each and every morning. I trust that my personal relationships with every single person in the Durban office have reflected that I wish to play a big role in creating the team spirit that allows each and every team member the ability to be the best version of themselves every day.

What is the best part about your job?

Connecting with new personalities each day and having the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of them and their families.

Tell us about your personal and professional growth while working at Carrick.

Those who know me personally know that by nature I have always been a reserved, quiet and generally shy person, an introvert through and through. Since I moved to South Africa and through my journey in financial services with Carrick, I know and others confirm, that I have made great strides in coming ‘out of my shell’. This organisation has enhanced my interpersonal skills like no other before, which has given me the confidence and ability to be successful and give back through dedication and hard work. Aside from personal growth, the knowledge and expertise I have gained in the last 4 years has been remarkable. This is because Carrick always endeavours to provide its employees with the very best training by industry experts from all over the world. I have completed my regulatory examinations in South Africa and continue to enhance my personal development through the internationally recognized CISI (Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment).

What is a typical day at work like for you?

As part of my vision for 2020, I joined the 5am club this year and am happy that I can quite honestly say, it’s been the decision that has had the most impact on my daily life thus far. This involves a morning run for 30-45 minutes to get me ready for the day ahead. I arrive at the office sometime between 6:30 and 7:00 and then plan my day ahead. A typical day usually involves 2 or 3 meetings with clients and prospects away from the office and can involve a fair amount of driving. When I am not seeing face-to-face with clients, I spend a lot of my day at my laptop, preparing reports and advice recommendations, and responding to my emails. In between all of this I will spend time with my Business Development Specialist, whose main focus is on running my diary and booking meetings or doing prospecting and paperwork. I am on hand to provide support and guidance in any way possible to make sure that our business is in the best possible shape for the weeks ahead.

My accounting degree, my experience in managing the finances of world-class companies, my business management experience, as well as my expertise in the financial services industry, provide me with a holistic understanding of my client’s needs during the various stages of life, each with its unique financial goals.

What is the best part about your job?

The best part of my job is guiding clients to understand and realise their financial position, and then to build realistic solutions and structures to preserve and grow their wealth and reach their financial goals for current and future generations. I enjoy providing solutions to the unique problems and opportunities that each individual client presents.

Working at an award-winning global advisory group with some of the best people in the industryprovides me with the opportunity to continuously better myself and the service offering to my clients. I have always strived for and believed in surrounding oneself with likeminded people.

What is a typical day at work like for you?

Engaging in morning exercise (mostly squash) before work, gets me ready and motivated for the day. Getting a head start to the day ensures that I am focused and in control to achieve the day’s objectives. First on my list of business for the day, is confirming the day’s appointments after which I catch up on the latest financial indicators and market news. Dealing with client concerns and queries is priority before I engage with prospective clients. The highlight of my day is interacting with clients. The remainder of the day I spend on research, building solutions and drafting proposals.

What is the best part about your job?

I am extremely passionate about helping others. Working at Carrick affords me the opportunity to give back, which is very important to me and my family. I do this through Carrick’s Corporate Social Investment Partner, Signature of Hope Trust, and by volunteering some of my time to the Robinhood Foundation.

Prior to joining Client Services, my role was as a Business Development Specialist (BDS). This role was crucial to my development within the organisation as it helped me to grow into a more confident individual and gave me the ability to meet new people and add value for many families.

What is a typical day at work like for you?

I wake up at 5am and head off to the gym for an hour, followed by a swim to cool off. I then spend as much time as I can with my son before heading off to the office. I spend most of my day preparing for and attending client meetings, as well as arranging more meetings for the rest of the day. I always make time to catch up on the news as I am extremely passionate about being up to date with what’s going on in our volatile world and in the sector that I work in.

My success is measured by the success of our clients. While my responsibilities may cover vast terrain, my role within Carrick is simpleto deliver excellence to clients by far exceeding their expectations. The details of this may differ between clients, but it may involve, for instance, creating a holistic financial plan to synergize local and offshore assets, or to simply uplift a client’s brand experience. All in all, I am responsible for ensuring our clients receive an abundance of value and remain overjoyed with their experience at Carrick Wealth.

What is the best part about your job?

Again, the best part of my job is in direct alignment with my clients’ experiences. The happier they are, the happier I am.

One of the greatest perks of working at Carrick is that the high-performance environment  encourages you to learn, develop and upskill every single day. Aside from the vast financial expertise learnt on a daily basis, Carrick is one of the greatest teachers of all things to do with “success”. This includes goal setting, time management, effective communication, sales, coordinating events, hitting targets etc. Ultimately, Carrick has developed, and continues to develop me into a highly competent Wealth Specialist with a particular emphasis on Client Servicing.

What is a typical day at work like for you?

Typically, I arrive at the office at 07h30 and begin my day by reviewing the local and international markets to ensure my clients remain informed about relevant news and updates. I proceed to outline my daily objectives and review my shortterm, mediumterm, and long-term goals. The remainder of my day will consist of meetings with clients and assisting with their investment planning needs. Each step of the way I vet my activity through one criterion – “Does this add value to my clients?” Anything other than a resounding “ABSOLUTELY!” gets eliminated from the schedule.

I have some 40 years of experience in the industry which I readily share with my peers. This, plus the fact that I always exude a positive attitude, benefits both my colleagues and clients, I believe.

Carrick encourages me to be completely goal orientated, which translates into me setting short term objectives to meet these goals. The goals can also be set for the entire team and we are able to help each other by communicating our wins and losses each week, as well as doing team training where each member has the chance to teach the rest of the team something new. Combining all these factors adds to the success of our department and the whole company.

What is the best part about your job?

Because I have a fear of becoming stagnant, my favourite aspect of my job is that I am always learning something new. This may range from changing legislation in the complex world of finance, to how to improve the service being given to my clients.

Tell us about your personal and professional growth while working at Carrick.

I started at Carrick in the beginning of 2019 as a Business Development Specialist. After 6 months I was promoted to the position of Wealth Specialist in the Client Servicing Department. Working at Carrick has taught me how to clearly define my professional and personal goals, leading to me creating daily working habits that ensure I meet my objectives. This, I believe, will ensure that my long-term goals will be met and that I uphold high levels of service to my clients.

What is a typical day at work like for you?

My day begins a little before 6am with a cup of coffee while reading up on current affairs and market information. This is followed by an hour-long exercise session. I arrive at work a little before 8am and usually start the day with a team meeting or an update from one of our providers. The rest of the day is taken up by meetings with my clients and assisting with their investment planning.
