Craig Featherby - Carrick Wealth

Craig believes that building a culture of leadership starts with those at the top – the drivers of the vision. Over a span of fourteen years in the financial services industry, Craig has concentrated on the craft of management, coupled with a passion for the financial services industry. He draws on a career that has taken him to the apex of the international finance industry, as far as the Middle East and Asia, and to some of the top positions in the financial world.

Born in Zimbabwe, junior-schooled in Melbourne, Australia, and educated at Kwazulu Natal’s Michaelhouse, throughout his journey Craig has carried with him the principles of leadership. From his early days at Ernst & Young and at ABSA Bank Limited, his career has taken him to the Middle East as a Financial Adviser and to the Far East, where he was involved in Wealth Management and Offshore Investments, eventually becoming Regional Manager for Africa (Financial Advisory/Wealth Management) for one of the largest independent offshore financial consultancies.

A philanthropist at heart, Craig believes that leadership should be translated into action to uplift the community. In this respect, he is a co-founder of Signature of Hope Trust and a generous donor to various NGOs.

Mike Potts - Carrick Wealth

Mike Potts

Managing Director

Michael brings with him a wealth of experience in the financial services industry, including senior positions as a secured lending manager, sales manager and marketing manager.

Born in the UK, Michael holds qualifications from the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) as well as certification in regulatory examinations with the Financial Services Board.

Prior to joining Carrick Wealth, Michael was area manager for an international offshore brokerage in Johannesburg, where he was responsible, over a period of four years, for team recruitment and development. During his tenure, Michael created their Business Development Team and the Johannesburg branch to the 5th position in the group. Having been a financial advisor himself, achieving top 5 consultant globally in 2013, he is passionate about creating and developing high performance teams.

Michael is a member of the Carrick Investment Committee which meets once a month to ensure that all the underlying managers are still operating within their mandates and that their risk-adjusted returns are in line with Carrick's expectations.

Michael has a young family which keeps him very busy. In his free time, he relaxes by taking his dogs for long walks. This, he believes, helps him to clear his mind and re-focus on what is important.

Anthony Palmer - Carrick Wealth

Anthony Palmer

Head of Investment Committee

Anthony was born in Johannesburg and matriculated from Damelin college in 1991. He is a qualified chartered accountant, holding a B.Comm and B.Comm Accounting, is a Member of the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants, a USA Series 7 and 63 Representative and a UK Securities and Financial Derivatives and Commodities Representative.

Anthony spent eleven years working abroad in structured credit sales and derivative marketing at JP Morgan in London and Deutsche Bank in London and Wall street. His last position at Deutsche Bank was as managing director and global head of the alternative risk markets group.

On returning to South Africa, Anthony started his own business in the finance and venture capital industry. After identifying an opportunity in providing off-shore financial planning to South African residents Anthony joined Carrick as a senior adviser and to deliver product development, training and strategic input.

Anthony is Chairman of the Carrick Investment Committee where his team provides a variety of solutions to companies in order to enhance their product offerings to their clients. The team work to develop solutions that enhance a company’s current product offerings, delivering bespoke solutions that compliment business offerings.

Bryan Austen

Director: Finance

Bryan has always had a passion for numbers and financial markets and participated in the JSE Schools Challenge and UCT Mathematics competition to name a few. He joined the workforce as a financial manager and went on to achieve his B.Comm from UNISA majoring in Economics and Finance while studying part-time.

Wanting experience in the corporate arena and to follow his true passion, Bryan joined an international financial services company in the role of Financial Officer for the Africa region. It was here that Bryan gained invaluable experience setting up offices throughout Africa and taking on roles in operations, admin and human resources. He has also passed his CISI and FSCA regulatory examinations.

Bryan joined Carrick as Group Financial Manager and was shortly thereafter promoted to Group Financial Director. Bryan was jointly responsible for setting up the financial, administration and human resources divisions both locally and in the new offices within the Carrick group. Responsible for the overall financial functioning of the organisation, Bryan plays a key role in guiding the board with investment decisions, ensuring the security of the company's assets.

Bryan is also the Financial Officer of the Signature of Hope Trust, which he handles with pride. He's a firm believer in giving back to the community and those in need.

Things he's interested in:

For Bryan, life is all about balance. When he's not behind his desk analysing figures and trends, you'll find him spending time with his wife and children or participating in some sort of extreme sport. He is an avid triathlete and mountain biker.

Rashay Makan

Director: Operations

Rashay completed his schooling at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth; thereafter, he went on to complete his Bachelor of Business Science Management Studies with honours in Finance from the University of Cape Town. In addition, he is currently in the process of completing his CFA charter.

He began his career in wealth management in 2013 as a graduate trainee where he gained his knowledge and skills in the financial advisory industry. His passion for the industry, leadership ability and entrepreneurial flair led him to found the Carrick Development Academy in 2015. The Academy served as a graduate program for advisors in the Carrick Group.

Rashay was later promoted to Operations Director where he now drives the business operations strategy for the Carrick Group of companies to ensure efficient and effective business process.

Rashay is an avid sports fan and in his time downtime, you'll find him supporting Arsenal in the English Premier League. He also has a love for the outdoors and enjoys hiking and swimming at every opportunity he gets.

Fred van Niekerk - Carrick Wealth

Fred van Niekerk

Director and Regional Head: Western Cape

Fred grew up on a farm in the Breede River Valley in the Western Cape. He went to school at Paarl Boys High and then Stellenbosch University.

Fred started his career as an independent financial advisor in the UK in 2001 and was consistently one of the company’s top performers over an 11-year period. He became the youngest ever area manager responsible for the Southern England region before returning to South Africa.

Since his return, Fred has established himself as an authority in international wealth management. As Director and Regional Head: Western Cape, Fred ensures strategy is implemented and the team stays motivated and focussed on the end goal of providing clients with solutions that are aligned to their financial objectives.

Testament to Fred’s skill as a motivating leader, his Monday morning meetings are legendary with standing room only.

Thomas Papenfus Carrick

Thomas Papenfus

Director and Regional Head: Gauteng

South African born Thomas spent a couple of years serving in the British Army. After leaving the armed forces in 2001, he commenced a highly successful corporate career, working his way onto UK multinational boards.

With international business experience spanning 25 countries, he has over 3 years’ experience in board-level positions and more than 8 years' experience in senior leadership roles. As the leader of several large multinational teams, Thomas gained a thorough understanding of global markets and trends and highly experienced in the implementation of bespoke long-term wealth strategies for offshore investors.

Thomas has a Diploma in Marketing and Management from Varsity College as well as RE 5 qualifications. In his role as Director and Regional Head: Gauteng, he leads a team of Wealth Specialists, developing them to become the next generation of advisers who will be leading a change in the financial services industry.

David Morgan Carrick

Paul Mitchell

Director and Regional Head: KwaZulu-Natal

Born in Durban and educated at Jeppe High School for Boys, Johannesburg, Paul’s career began in the corporate arena in senior positions before he started his own business.

Paul returned to financial services when he joined one of the world’s largest independent advisory firms in Durban giving him the opportunity to hone his skills in an industry he’s passionate about. Having spent over 24 years in senior and director positions, Paul has been fortunate to work with people at all levels from Chief Executive Officers to Government Officials.

Committed to the financial wellbeing of his clients, Paul makes sure he provides every client with the best possible options for their individual needs. As Director and Regional Head: KwaZulu-Natal and a solid background in business management Paul is well placed to meet both Carrick and its clients’ expectations.

Paul is a qualified PADI dive instructor and an avid league squash player.

Amongst other accomplishments, he’s completed an in-service chef apprenticeship, which has not only served him well in the restaurant industry but also with his wife and three teenage children.

Paul de Waal

Director

Paul is a highly experienced and knowledgeable investment specialist. He joined Carrick Wealth in November 2015, having worked in various capacities for some of the major investment and product houses in South Africa.

Most of his schooling was spent at prestigious Grey College in Bloemfontein before his family moved to Cape Town.

He has spent 11 years thus far in the financial services industry, and holds a Higher Certificate in Wealth Management (NQF5 and RE5) and passed the Key Individual examination, which qualifies him to manage a financial services company. He is currently working towards CFP® certification.

His experience covers financial property investment, investment specialisation with Discovery, and life assurance and investments with Liberty, and ACS Financial Services. At both Liberty and Discovery, he was awarded various certificates as a Top 10 Consultant.

Paul specialises in investment solutions and financial planning including business assurance, estate and retirement planning, and risk.

By nature, Paul is a natural sportsman and holds Free State colours in cricket and soccer. Nowadays, he enjoys golf, mountain biking, reading and cooking. He has travelled extensively both for work and for pleasure, and enjoys cultural experiences, especially when it comes to food tasting.
