Women’s Day 2020 – Advice from our female champions

In celebration of Women’s Day and the phenomenal women in Carrick, we asked some of the powerhouse female leaders in our organisation to share their best advice for young females now entering the corporate world.

Here are the wise words and insights which have impacted their own careers in a big way.

My snippet of advice to a young female entering her career is to form a collective of mentors you admire. Lean on but don’t limit mentors to ones you know personally. Read books; listen to podcasts; follow on social media, those who you most admire. Take from each individual’s actions or advice what resonates most powerfully with you and speaks to your own beliefs as a woman. For myself in 2020, a woman I have closely followed is Michelle Obama; for the enormous amount of respect, she displays toward every individual she meets and her belief that through the combination of hard work, good choices, and persistence anything is achievable.

 – Jessica Carroll, Operations Manager

Having worked in the corporate world for 24 years, in every job my focus has been to be the absolute best I can be. To stand out and to be heard in a male-dominated industry, you have got to be 25% better than the rest. Don’t be afraid to use your female intuition when it comes to caring, as a woman, this is your superpower when it comes to connecting with clients and adding a personal touch to your business. Fake it ‘til you make it, ladies. Do everything you can to act confident, even if you don’t feel that way. To be the authority in everything you do and present, put in the extra hours to practice. It will help you greatly in becoming successful.

 – Samantha Bowen, Director

Be resilient, find a mentor – someone who can inspire you to be a better version of yourself, keep challenging yourself daily, don’t compare yourself to others, be kind, and stay humble.

I truly believe that limits only exist in the mind.

‘’Be careful with your thoughts, they control your destiny’’.

 – Carmen Gribble, Financial Manager

As women we can achieve incredible things, all you need is:

  1. The right mindset and a can-do attitude
  2. Be hungry and never give up
  3. An amazing work ethic
  4. Stand strong for what you believe in, be as courageous as a lion.
  5. Have ambition as high as your crown and;
  6. A good pair of heels because, “if you give a girl the right shoes, she can conquer the world” – Marilyn Monroe.

– Rene Walker, Offshore New Business Administration Manager

The advice I have offered to younger women either starting out in their careers or struggling with moving forward in their careers is that it is extremely important to build “your” brand.

You are the product. It is not about what you do, but HOW you do it!

Believe in yourself and believe in your capabilities Take the risk and take action! Put in the time and effort and, very importantly, manage your energy and not your time.

You will make mistakes but be kind to yourself…it is a lot harder than you think! It only builds strength, and strength of character is what you need.

Your reputation and your attitude are your biggest assets.

Don’t be afraid to change course. You never know what life will throw at you, challenge yourself, and be open to new opportunities that may arise.

  – Michele Murphy, Senior Executive Assistant to Group CEO

If you believe that being a woman in any way hinders your capabilities or how people view you- it will. Your beliefs and your mind are the only things holding you back. You and you alone are responsible for your mindset.

As Margaret Thatcher says:

‘’ Watch your thoughts for they become your words,

Watch your words for they become your actions,

Watch your actions for they become your habits,

Watch your habits as that defines your character,

Watch your character as that becomes your Destiny.’’

Control your own destiny by controlling your thoughts and mindset.

If you don’t ask, you don’t get it. In corporate don’t be afraid to put up your hand for something you want. Just a word of caution: if you put up your hand, give it your all. Non-negotiable.

– Hailey Roos, Client Servicing – Manager

The best advice I would give a young female entering the corporate world is to aim high and just go for it. I think no dream is too big to achieve and we sometimes hold ourselves back. We all make mistakes, but how we acknowledge the mistake, learn from it, and grow from it, is what counts. It is so important to always be true to yourself and to have integrity.

 – Bronwyn Adriaanse, Commissions and Payroll Manager

We wish you a wonderful, happy Women’s Day. Know that you are special and that your contributions are making our world a better and more successful place.
