Finding Courage: Making Resolutions That Count

craigAsk anyone and they will tell you that by the 2nd of January, their New Year’s resolutions have flown right out of the window without a backward glance.

Sound familiar?

Whether you commit to resolutions or not, I think we can all agree that we all have the best intentions to make positive changes for the year ahead.

But let’s be honest for a moment.

From the offset, our outlook for 2016 has been pretty bleak. And who could blame us? By the end of 2015 our government went through no less than three finance ministers within a single week. Our current financial climate is enough to rain on anyone’s parade, even the most optimistic among us.

So yes, working off that extra weight and making an effort to drink less has great value, but as with everything that matters, a good shift in focus helps us re-align our priorities: like finding courage to overcome the challenges we face (and will face) in the year ahead.

We can’t avoid the inevitable. And challenges are no exception. We can succumb to fear, or muster the courage to do what is meant to be done in spite of fear. We can either be pushed aside by the effects of it, or choose to push through despite it.

You might be thinking, “these flowery words are all well and good, but so what?” What does that look like for you and I?

  • We can be better – always setting the bar higher for ourselves and each other
  • We can remember our core values – integrity, transparency and professionalism
  • We can be courageous in everything, especially in the face of adversity

Times are tough. And because of that we’re going to have a great year. It’s all about perspective.

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” – Nelson Mandela

Until next month, take care.
